Ipod Case
Camera Case
This project was born out of necessity. I throw my camera and Ipod in my purse and they have gotten very beat up. I know they make skins and covers and such, but I don't like the Ipod cases because many don't let you dock the Ipod without taking them off. Which I then never put them back on. Anyway, I made the purple case for my camera and then made the green one for my Ipod. I like the way I did the green case better, because I think it makes the shape look nicer and the closure is more secure. My progress shoots were less than pitiful, so I'll just tell you what I did.
This project requires:
  • Felt- I used wool and wool blend felt because it holds up well. Acrylic felt will tear more easily.
  • Velcro for the closure.
  • Scraps of ribbon, fabric, felt-- whatever you've got.
Step 1: I cut the felt to the appropriate size. I laid the Ipod and camera on the felt, but mostly I guessed. For the green Ipod case, I cut the felt 3 3/8" wide and 14 3/8" long. The purple camera case is 3 1/8" wide by 12" long. The length should be approximately 3 times the height of the item. The width should be about 5/8" to 3/4" wider than the item.
Step 2: I sewed one piece of velcro to the very end of what will be the flap. That way, any embellishment on the front is over the velcro stitching and not vice versa.
Step 3: I then embellished the flap on the side opposite of the velcro. Remember, only the top third will be seen on the front of the case and the next third will be on the back. For the purple, I just stitched ribbon and tucked the ends around to the other side. The inside of that one doesn't look too hot. The green case, I appliqued a piece of fabric for the tree and a piece of felt for the trunk. I used Heat 'n Bond to hold the items in place and then zigzag stitched around them. (See my tutorial on appliques.) Inside of this case-- much improved.
Step 4: I then folded the green case into thirds and used pins to mark where the velcro needed to be placed to match with the velcro on the flap. I then stitched the velcro on.
Step 5: Then folding the bottom third of the case up, I stitched each side approximately 1/16" from the edge.
