Interfacing

All of our interfacings are sold by the yard. For more details on any of the interfacings, click on the picture or the product name. We have done our best to describe how the interfacing feels, how it is to sew and how stiff it is.

If interested, here is a little primer on interfacings:

The purpose of interfacing is to provide shape, support and stability to items made of fabric. Interfacings come as fusible or sew-in. Fusible has an adhesive on one side that melts to the fabric when it is ironed. Sew-in has no adhesive and must be sewn into the seam to keep it in the sewn item. We carry only nonwoven interfacing in fusible and sew-in-- woven and knit interfacings are available, but are used predominately in garments. Nonwoven is a good all-purpose interfacing. The decision to use fusible or sew-in is determined for you once you pick what weight of interfacing you want to use. The heavier interfacings tend to be sew-in, the lighter weights are fusible.

In the case of fusibles, pick an interfacing that is slightly lighter in weight than your fabric. Otherwise, the interfacing will crease with wear and cause creases in your fabric. Fusibles are great for adding a little body to the fabric and for increasing the durability of an item. For quilting weight cottons, you can use Pellon 931 or 3804 fusible, for lighter fabrics or silks, you can use Pellon 911. Use fusible interfacing at stress points where two fabrics are sewn together- it reduces the chances of the stitching pulling out of the fabrics. (For example, on a pocket in a handbag or on an item, fuse interfacing to the fabric supporting the pocket and the pocket is less likely to pull off.) Fuse-A-Shade is the heaviest fusible we carry and is often used for home decor projects that should be stiff (specifically designed for window shades).

Sew-ins, on the other hand, can be much heavier than your fabric. Since they are not adhered to the fabric, any creases occurring in the interfacing will not show on your fabric. The sew-in interfacings can provide a lot of body to an item, such as a handbag, allowing it to stand up on its own. Sew-ins are also suitable for many home decor projects. Using sew-ins does take some practice. I like to cut my interfacing approximately 1/8" smaller all around than my fabric (so I can see the edge of the fabric when sewing). Then I lay the fabric right-side down and pin the interfacing ensuring I don't stretch or leave gaps in the fabric. When I'm being really cautious, I then baste (a long stitch- usually the longest stitch on your machine) the interfacing to the fabric within the seam allowance. Then sew your item together as you normally would. You are just sewing three layers-- two pieces of fabric and one of interfacing.
The sew-in interfacings we carry in order of weight (heaviest to lightest) are Freudenberg B0509, Peltex 70 (similar to Timtextm), Pellon 65, and Pellon 50.

The Ban-Rol products are a special type of sew-in interfacing, originally designed to keep waistbands from curling. They are a very stiff product which can be used to provide stability to belts or watchbands. We have also used Ban-Rol at the tops of handbags to keep the handles from folding the top of the bag down (we just stitched it to the top seam allowance). It is very stiff, so always sew it to a seam allowance (after the seam allowance is sewn), not into a seam allowance (where it would have to bend).
