Infant Burp Cloths

Burp clothes are a fun and easy project and make a great gift for any new parent! I use cloth diapers as burp cloths, changing pads and bibs. Plus, they make an easily replaceable and portable security blanket.
ribbon-fringed burp cloth
  • This burp cloth is my personal favorite and a great use of leftover ribbon. This one uses a bag of ribbons with one piece of 7/8" hot pink grosgrain 17 inches long (for the flat fold diaper).
  • To make the fringe, see the detailed instructions.
  • Once the fringe is made, adhere Heat 'n Bond to the back and iron it to the diaper. Turn under the ends to finish and stitch the ribbon along both edges.
monogrammed burp cloth
  • On this burp cloth, I used the flat fold diaper, which is the thinner, larger diaper. I created a fabric applique (click here for detailed instructions on fabric appliques) and stitched around it with a small zig zag stitch. I then Thermowebbed a ribbon to the diaper and stitched along both edges. To finish the ends of the ribbon, I just folded it under before I pressed it to the diaper. Also, the flat fold diapers are not always square, so I turned up a little "hem" to square it up and applied the ribbon over it.
appliqued and trimmed burp cloth
  • This is the pre fold diaper with an applique ironed on and stitched (either by hand or machine to withstand washing and hard wear) and stitched on polar puff trim. (Polar puff trim is fine as it is all sewn together and the puffs ravel before they fall off. Do not use any of the ball fringes, as they contain a metal clip that attaches them to the trim, which can come off and be swallowed.)
  • To affix the trim, I cut it approximately 3 inches longer than the width of the diaper. I pinned it and then stitched it on, leaving 1 1/2" of trim on each end. I then trimmed the ends of the trim, turned them to the back of the diaper and stitched them down. (I used to fold the ends under before I stitched so that I only stitched once. I have found that it is hard to start your stitching on the bulk and I had trouble keeping the trim from shifting as I backstitched through the bulk, etc.)
