Fabrics used in this crib set are:

Crib Safety
  • Safety standards assume a child is less than 35 inches high and under the age of 2. If cribs are used for an older or larger child, the child runs the risk of falling out.
  • Cribs should not be placed near anything that poses a danger of strangulation or suffocation (e.g. window cords).
  • The openings between the slats on the crib should not be more than 2 3/8".
  • A baby, newborn to 12 months, should be placed on its back to sleep.
  • Only a fitted mattress pad and sheet should be used on the mattress. The mattress should fit the crib securely without gaps betweeen the mattress and crib.
  • Pillows, plush animals and quilts should be used for decoration only and should be removed when the baby is sleeping in the crib.
  • Most recently, the American Academy of Pediatrician recommends removing crib bumpers entirely and The National Safety Council recommends removing bumpers once a child can pull themselves to a standing position.

Dick and Jane fabrics are produced by Michael Miller Fabrics under license from Pearson Educational.

General Guidance and Measurements

A standard crib mattress is 28" x 52". I don't go into very detailed instructions because these pieces are pretty easy. And you can alter them to fit your whim or your crib.

Dust Ruffle Step 1 Dust Ruffle

The dust ruffle I took the easy easy easy route. I just made four panels: two 28" x 12" and two 52" x 12". I added binding around the sides and bottom. On the long sides, you will have to piece 45" wide fabric.

Dust Ruffle Step 2

Then I turned the crib upside down and used double stick tape to stick it to the crib. For a sturdier hold, you can staple it to the crib. I know old fashioned dust ruffles went under the mattress, but at least on my crib, you don't have any room. Newer cribs have no space between the bottom and the sides, so this solves that problem and makes the dust ruffle 100 times easier.

Fitted Sheet Sheet

I cut the fabric for my sheet 44" wide x 68" long (that gives you 8" beyond the top of the mattress for the sides and to tuck under the bottom). Then cut out 7 1/2" square corners as shown in the picture. Sew those seams to create the corners. Then take four pieces of about 10" of elastic and stitch around the corners to keep the sheet tight on the mattress. You can just serge or zigzag the edges since they will be hidden under the mattress.

Dick and Jane Quilt Quilt

I made the quilt 36" x 50", but quite frankly, make it whatever size you want. I did the whole diamond pattern machine quilting on this quilt, but if that terrorizes you, look at our instructions for a quick quilt.

Dick and Jane Crib Bumper Crib Bumper

Crib bumpers are usually 10" high and 160" long. You basically made a long narrow quilt and ties and you've got a bumper. On this bumper, I changed the height to 9" so it matched the height of the panels on the fabric and I didn't lose any fabric. You spread your fabric and batting just like with a quilt and then stitch a vertical line every 10" inches (or whatever is appropriate for the print) to keep the batting and fabric in place. Bind the bumper and then attach ties. I attached one at the top and bottom of the bumper at 3 points along each side. These ties are 20" long, but make them as short as you can and still allow you to tie them.
