Pillow at top uses English Rose Wool Blend Felt, Cinnamon Paisley- Evelyn as applique background, Coral Watercolor- Evelyn for back, and Fuchsia Square Button. Second pillow uses Winter Sky Wool Blend Felt, Sky Wall Flower by Amy Butler for applique, and Grey Passion Vine Nigella on back.
Felt is all the rage right now for its texture and colors. Since it is a nonwoven fiber, it does not ravel, making it great for this reverse applique pillow project. Makes a great personalized gift.
Materials Needed:
  • felt for front of pillow (1/2 yard or less)
  • stencils for monogram
  • pillow form
  • fabric to cover back of pillow (yardage depends on pillow size- most pillows require 1/2 yard or less) We have a calculator for determining the size of your fabric pieces.
  • fabric for applique (less than a fat quarter)
  • small piece of fusible interfacing (such as Pellon 911) for fabric applique (less than a fat quarter)
Helpful Materials:
Step 1:

Cut the felt to the size required to fit your pillow form. Print and size the stencils as desired and affix with temporary spray adhesive to the felt.

Step 1
Step 2:

Using a hobby knife or sharp embroidery scissors, carefully cut out the stencil from the felt. Remember, you are removing the material INSIDE the letters, so you might want to color in the letters to make it easier (especially on the curly-q's).

Step 2
Step 3:

Measure the height and width of the entire design on the felt.

Step 3
Step 4:

Cut a piece of fabric approximately 1" wider and longer than the size of the rectangle you measured above. Cut a piece of fusible interfacing 1/4" smaller than the fabric.

Step 4
Step 5:

Press the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 5
Step 6:

Apply glue stick to wrong side of felt around the letters.

Step 6
Step 7:

Carefully lay felt down on fabric, arranging so that all the cut-outs are placed over fabric. Smooth with your hands and let glue stick dry for a few minutes.

Step 7
Step 8:

With your sewing machine, carefully stitch around letters. I like using a contrasting thread.

Step 8
Step 9:

Turn felt over and carefully trim fabric and interfacing close to letters. Be careful not to cut the felt!

Step 9
Step 9:

To make pillow, follow our pillow instructions and calculator.
