Embellishing a jean jacket is a fun and easy project. You can achieve some really cute looks with Heat 'n Bond adhesive and a little hand sewing. We embellished this jacket with the Hot Pink/Orange Tassel Trim, the Hot Pink/Orange Dot Trim, the Fuchsia/Gold Flower trim, and the Fuchsia/Orange tassels.
- Start with a jean jacket- this one is from the Gap, but since they're not paying us for the plug, use any jacket that you like!
- Lay out your trims and ribbons on the jacket before cutting to determine what should go where.
- Cut your longest pieces first and add approximately 1" to the length to allow for tucking the raw edges under. Use a little piece of Heat 'n Bond and iron the ends under 1/2". Then when you attach to your jacket, you don't have any raw edges showing.
- Iron the Heat 'n Bond to the back of your trim first. Then peel the paper backing and press the trim to your jacket. For best results, make sure your iron is hot enough to melt the adhesive and don't move the jacket until the adhesive cools. Of course, if you make a mistake, you can always remove the trim when the adhesive is hot.
- For those areas where it is difficult to get the trim to adhere (like at the corner of the pockets), just hand sew the trim down with a clear nylon or matching thread. You don't need to sew it really well- just enough to keep stress off the adhesive.
- To attach appliques, use the Heat 'n Bond adhesive sheets cut to the appropriate shape and tack down by hand, if desired.
- How much trim or ribbon do you need? For this jacket (Adult in Large), the following measurements apply:
- 42" around bottom
- 23" around both cuffs
- 7" for both collars (it's 19" around the collar)
- 22" for the chest (including length to fold under the placket)
- 12" for both pockets
- 17" across the upper back
- Wear and enjoy! Virtually all our trims and ribbons are washable (except the feathers), but I would recommend hand washing and drying on a hanger. You don't want your hard work pulled off by the washing machine!
