| For this project, I changed my original approach. I originally looked at curtains in a catalog and was busily computing the exact dimensions I wanted. While computing the yardage I needed, I realized that was a dumb idea, because I was going to be wasting fabric trying to get my curtains to be 2" longer or shorter. So I stepped back and approached it from generally how long I wanted the curtains to be and then rounded up or down to use all of the yardage.
Same idea if you are a few inches short on the yardage- just adjust both panels equally and use what you've got! |
| Step 1:
Adjust the widths of your fabric, if necessary. With the fabrics I used, the black was 45" wide and the embroidered linen was 50", so I cut the embroidered fabric to 45" wide. If the black had been 50" wide, I would have just left them that width-- it would just create more fullness. |
| Step 2:
Cut the fabric you are using for the center pieces into 2- 1 1/2 yard lengths. |
| Step 3:
Cut the fabric you are using for the borders into 2- 12" long pieces and 2- 6" long pieces. |
| Step 4:
Sew the short border piece to the top of the center piece using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam allowance toward the border and topstitch. Repeat for the other curtain. |
| Step 5:
Sew the long border piece to the bottom of the center piece using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam allowance toward the border and topstitch. Repeat for the other curtain. |
| Step 6:
Hem the sides, top and bottom. Fold in 1/4" and again 1/4" to hide the raw edges. Press and then top stitch. |
| Step 7:
Mark the places for the deco rings with pins or a fabric pencil. Find the vertical center of your top border (around 2 1/2" or 3"). Then place your first mark 2" from the left edge and another mark 2" from the right edge. Measure between your two marks and divide by 5, which on a 45" wide curtain will give you approximately 7 1/2" between marks. |
| Step 8:
This part is scary, because it involves cutting holes in your new curtains! Place one side of the deco rings on the fabric with your mark from the last step in the center of the ring. Using a marker or fabric pencil, draw around the inside of the ring. Cut a hole slightly larger than the circle you traced. Apply fray check to the hole to prevent raveling. Then simply snap together the front and back of the deco ring (one piece has teeth, the other piece doesn't). Then repeat for the other 11 rings and you're done. |
