This portable playmat can be used for anything from protecting your carpet to outdoor picnics to a napping blanket.
  • Cut two squares of fabric for the front and back, each 44" x 44" (so approximately 1-1/4 yards). I decided to use the full width of the fabric, but you can make it whatever size works for you.
  • Place batting in between the two fabric layers (I used low-loft) and machine stitch around the design or in straight lines. I don't have any great tips for quilting, because I'm not that great at it. But I do start in the middle, my theory being that if I start shifting the fabric badly, I'm not shifting it all the way across the quilt. And I use lots of pins.
  • After quilting the layers, trim the mat square again. In this case, my finished size was about 42" x 42".
  • Make binding out of a coordinating fabric or use a pre-fab binding. Cut two strips of binding about 14" long to make ties. Fold in the raw edges on one end and stitch the end and one side. Pin each strip on the bottom of the playmat where it makes the most sense. On this mat, for example, I intended it to be folded in thirds before being rolled, so the ties are sewn to the middle third of the mat.
  • Bind the mat.
